When we receive Jesus in Holy Communion, we welcome Him with our whole bodies, minds, and spirits.
Here are the steps to follow when you receive Communion:
• Fold your hands, and join in singing the Communion hymn as you walk to the altar.
• When the person in front of you receives communion, reverently bow your head in anticipation of receiving Jesus.
• When it is your turn, you can receive the consecrated Host in your hand or on your tongue. To receive it in your hand, hold your hands out with the palms up. Please one hand underneath the other, and cup your hands slightly. To receive the Host on your tongue, fold your hands, and open your mouth, putting your tongue out.
• The Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion (EM) says, “The Body of Christ,” and you answer, “AMEN.” The priest or minister places the Host in your hand or on your tongue.
• If you have received the Host in your hand, carefully take it from your palm, and put it in your mouth in front of the Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion, and quietly return to your seat.
• You may also be offered Communion from the cup. After swallowing the Host, walk to where the cup is offered. The Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion says, “The Blood of Christ.” You answer, “AMEN.”
• Take the cup from the Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion (EM). Take a small sip and carefully hand the cup back.
• Pray a prayer of Thanksgiving.
